Camp Zarahemla

The first weekend in January, we stayed with the Thurgood side of the family in a cabin near White Pass called Camp Zarahemla. It turned out to be quite the adventure. Literally seconds before we went out of cell phone reception, I got a message saying that they were having problems with power outages and to bring lanterns. As soon as I listened to the message, we lost reception, so I couldn't call anyone else in the family to warn them. Sam and I stopped and got a few cheapo flashlights, but they didn't have lanterns.

Well, sure enough, there was no power. The whole place is heated by a giant wood-burning stove and the stove and oven are gas powered, so the only thing we were without was light. But let me tell you, it is hard to sit around in the dark and not feel depressed or crazy. Even worse than that is trying to keep track of and entertain so many little kids in the dark. Changing diapers and cooking also proved a bit difficult.

If you know my family, then you know they aren't ones to just sit around on their thumbs... they went to find out what was wrong. The lights flickered on for just a second once, and Sam saw a fireball shoot out someone in the trees. They investigated and found that a tree had fallen on a transformer. We called the power company and after some long hours, missing equipment, and several return trips, they were able to get the power on. Hallelujah! Of course, it went off again a few more times, but we did have power most of the rest of the time we were there.

It was lots of fun to be cozied up in a cabin surrounded by feet and feet of snow. We went sledding, ate lots of soup, and played Rock Band and Bananagrams. The little kids loved playing in the loft with all the beds. Everyone was there except Ben, who had to be back down at school. We missed you Ben!

Opposite from last year, Levi hated sledding. The only thing he liked about the snow was when Sam would get a pile of it in his hand and then blow it all away.

Having large families means never having good family pictures.

Christmas

Christmas morning. This was the first Christmas we have spent in our own house with our own little family. It was so nice and relaxing. We let Levi play with each gift for (almost) as long as he wanted to before moving on to the next gift. He really wasn't too into the opening of gifts, just playing with what was inside of them. After our little Christmas morning, we went over to Sam's parent's house and had a Christmas breakfast and opened more presents there. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of that.

Levi opened this present last, and he was hilarious about it. When he first saw what it was, he skipped around in circles clapping his hands for joy. It was the cutest thing... to bad I did catch it on video. Oh, it is a basketball hoop by the way.
Mommy and Brinley on Christmas morning.
Sam with his Dilbert books. We love Dilbert.
Levi with the quietbook Mommy sewed for him. Don't look too closely, I am a horrible seamstress. This was pretty much my first attempt. But Levi likes it. This is how Brinley spent most of Christmas... I'm sure she'll be more lively next year when she is more than 2 weeks old. Her shirt says "Mom and Dad's best present ever." We thought that was cute- she was our favorite Christmas gift this year.
A white Christmas!!!! A pretty rare occasion...I believe it was Sam's first since moving to Washington.
Levi got this trainset from Santa Claus!
Levi and Daddy cuddling Christmas morning.
Levi is hilarious... lately he has been sleeping with his head under his pillow. I think he got it from Sam.

Cute Pics

I took these pictures the morning of Christmas Eve. After I give the kids a bath, I tuck them into mine and Sam's bed (since it usually isn't made yet) to get them warmed up. I grabbed the camera and snapped these pictures and thought they were pretty cute. Um... Levi's froggy towel was green once upon a time, until we washed it with a red towel. Now he has a pink froggy towel. Oh well.

Christmas Eve 2008

Yes... I am finally getting around to this. Hooray! We spent Christmas Eve at Mom and Dad Thurgood's house. Everyone was there, so we had tons of fun. We did the usual thing: had TONS and YUMMY food; acted out the Nativity; sang Christmas songs; told Christmas stories; and exchanged gifts. New this year, we had the grandchildren display a talent. I'm not posting all the pictures, but we have some very talented kids! It was so much fun, just like always. And our family is getting huge! There were 27 of us plus one on the way... needless to say, it was crowded.

Levi opening his gift from cousin Carson. Lightening McQueen... what boy doesn't love Cars?

Madi, the oldest grandchild with Brinley, the youngest.

Levi's talent: throwing a ball. Of course, I got the before and after, but never could quite catch him in the act.
My niece Kailey... talk about flexible!
Sam with our nephew Bronson. Both were shepherd's in our reenactment.
Me with my kids! I love them!
Our narrators: Jared (my brother) and Madi (niece)
A few of the grandkids: Logan (wiseman), Jace (shepherd), Kailey (Mary), Jackson (Joseph), Savannah (angel)
Cutie Parker as a shepherd
Brinley's "1st Christmas" outfit that Grandma Thurgood gave her. She was so small that even the newborn outfit drowned her. She was still in preemie clothes at this point.
Sam and Levi as shepherds. I was the pianist (along with my sister Lacey).
The sweetest little shepherd!
Levi and cousin Carson (and cousin Parker, who didn't make this picture) LOVE to play in Grandma and Grandpa's fireplace. All the grandkids have loved to do this, and they have cleaned out the fireplace over the years... surprisingly though, there is still some soot left, because they always end up dirty!

Giving in....

I've been tagged, and for the first time I'm going to do it. Way to go Eliza for breaking me down! :) Two reasons, really, for following through on this tag. 1) The pictures for the next posts that I have been planning on doing for A LONG time (Christmas, pictures of Brinley, etc.) are all on Sam's computer, and the extra step of transferring them to my computer (or getting his out and blogging from it) has made it so those posts just haven't happened. So since I've been so neglectful, I'm looking for something easy to post. And 2) This gave me an opportunity to post a picture and tell a story from before I started blogging. So here's the tag:

Tagged

1) Choose the 4th folder where you store your pictures on your computer.
2) Select the 4th picture in the folder.
3) Explain the picture.
4) Tag 4 people to do the same. No cheating (cropping, editing, etc.) Have fun!!

This is Levi 6 1/2 months old. The poor kiddo was sick with a cold and had a very stuffy nose. He wasn't sleeping well, because he couldn't breathe. We discovered that it helped when he was more upright, so we had him sleep in the rocking chair supported by pillows. It worked! Levi has slept with a pillow ever since.

Quotes

I just finished reading Stone Tables by Orson Scott Card, and there were a few quotes from the book that I really liked. So, I thought I would share them here.

The Lord God treats no human being as a slave. We are all his children. He would see all his creation brought to ruin before he would take free will away from even the most rebellious of men. Men must bear the consequences of their choices, and they can choose only what is within their power. But choose they may, now and always. This world was created for humankind to dwell in it; if humans lose the freedom of choice that separates them from the animals, then this world would have no purpose.

God conversing with Moses:

"In every soul is goodness that might be, and evil that might, and even though I know how much of each will come to be, the child must have his day to choose and show himself and all around him which he loves more: his appetites? his power? his safety? or the leap out of the self into service in the kingdom of God?"

"Yet it is only there that the soul finds its greatness."

"But they must choose it because they love the works of God, not because they seek their own greatness. So I hide the greatness from them, so their choices can be made for love alone."

"May I not tell them, then?"

"You must tell them. But only the great-hearted will believe and act on what you tell. It is the downfall of evil, that it never sees far enough ahead. The enemies of God steal what pieces of power they can steal, not realizing that in the stealing, they destroy what they try to possess. When at last there is nothing left, they will wail to heaven, being in torment at their nothingness, envying the righteous who possess all things; but the law is irrevocable, that nothing can be owned forever unless it gives itself freely, and no one can rule forever except him who serves utterly."

Gingerbread Houses

I wanted to post this earlier, but didn't get around to it. Better late than never, huh? Way back on December 8th, we had my parents over to make gingerbread houses with us. It was very fun! Mom and Dad built a very sound house...would anyone who knows Dad expect less? Sam's house was a bit complex, and mine was the simplest one ever. Levi couldn't stop shoving chocolate in his mouth... boy, were we sorry about that later that night. He was bouncing off the walls! Sam finally had enough of it and put him in his crib. About one second later he was completely zonked out.

Life with our newest blessing

Wow... I am finally getting around to this. And my little girl is only one month old today! But hey, I have a good excuse... I have a newborn and an attention-desperate toddler, so most days I barely get around to brushing my teeth, much less cleaning the house or posting on my blog. Last night Sam was an exceptional husband and cleaned up the house quite a bit, including vacuuming, so I feel like I can post today (plus also, Brinley is actually sleeping without me having to hold her right now... a miracle!) So, I accidentally uploaded the pictures in the opposite order than I was intending, and I don't want to take the time to rearrange them, so this post will be told in reverse chronological order.

Levi loves his baby sister. Sometimes he gets a little too excited around her, resulting in tears, but Brinley is pretty tough. I wouldn't say that Levi has ever been jealous of Brinley, more upset that he no longer has our undivided attention. It is a major life-altering change to go from only child to older child. It is fun to watch Levi interact with Brinley, though. It took him no time at all to learn her name (Min-mee), and he loves to hold her which he indicates by pointing to her and then to himself. I think more than anything, Levi loves to give his baby sister kisses. So sweet!

This is Brinley right before we went home from the hospital. She was so itsy tiny that even the newborn outfits were huge on her. I actually ended up buying several Preemie onsies for her to wear the first three weeks.
Brinley's first bath. Thank you, Lacey, for taking these pictures since I was still like a beached whale from all the epidural meds. I heard her scream for most of the bath, but she stopped when they submerged her in the water. Ahh... something familiar!
Here's our little girl, all 6 lbs, 10 oz of her. We learned very quickly that she doesn't like to be messed with. Still, a month later, she screams when we change her clothes. She's okay with the diaper changing now though . I think she realized that a clean diaper meant relief.
Brinley just minutes after birth. She was so pink, right from the start. All the nurses commented on how great her color was.
The proud Momma and Daddy!
Alright, time for the labor and delivery story. I started having contractions a couple of weeks before Brinley was born. We had been hoping to wait until after the first of the year to have Brinley so that we would have insurance, but by Thanksgiving I just wanted her out! She was sitting so low that my hips had a hard time functioning and she was sitting on nerves making it so pain randomly shot down my legs knocking me off my feet. When the doctor checked me at 36 or 37 weeks, I was dilated to a one. Because I was so uncomfortable, we decided that if Brinley hadn't been born yet, the doctor would induce me on the 17th.

So, on Friday the 12th, I was having contractions again. It got to the point where I was just standing in the kitchen crying because of the pain, and Levi would alternate between hugging and kissing me and standing five feet away looking terrified. I called Sam and just said "I need help". The crying tipped him off that it was time to head home from work. After a couple of hours, we decided to take Levi to Sam's parents and head to the hospital, though we knew our doctor wouldn't like it: he was in the middle of a 12 hour surgery at another hospital and he works solo... so no on-call doctor available. But I was in more pain than I ever had been with Levi. I was sure I must be quite dilated. Got to the hospital and they put in under observation. I was dilated to a two... that it!...and of course my contractions slowed way down. After a couple of hours, I dilated to a three so they decided because I was progressing that they would admit me. That was around 9pm. The nurse gave me some pain meds so that I could sleep and they's see how much I had progressed in the morning. Well, morning came, but progression didn't! I was still at a three. They had me get up and walk around, then lay down and be monitored. Nothing was happening. I was so frustrated!!! Sometime late morning/early afternoon they put me on Pitocin to get the contractions really going. I've always told people with Levi that the Pitocin didn't make my contractions worse like I had heard they did. I think I know why now.... Pitocin doesn't work on me. They started me out on a 2 (not really sure what that means, that's just what the IV said). My sister called hours later when I still hadn't progressed and said, "Well, do they have her at a 12 yet?" (The highest dose she had gotten, which made her contractions extremely hard and painful.) I was at a 20, and I still couldn't hardly feel a thing.

We were waiting on the doctor to come and break my water. He was supposed to show up between one and two. At four o'clock he still wasn't there. Here I was, doped up on Pitocin and still not progressing. I was BEYOND frustrated and embarressed. The nurse was even trying to talk me into going home... after I had already been at the hospital for 23 hours! We decided that if the doctor didn't show up by 5pm then we would go home. Well, the doctor showed up at 4:30pm (He had a patient in labor at another hospital). He broke my water (I was dilated to a 4, finally... I guess the weak contractions were doing a little something.). As soon as he broke my water, I started shaking. They put in an internal monitor so they could measure how hard the contractions actually were... they were pretty surprised by how intense they were. And the pain was instantly excrusiating. Good thing the epidural guy was on the floor since he had just given another lady one. I got my epidural (not nearly as pleasant an experience as with Levi, but not horrible either) and my entire right side when very numb. My left side was slower to catch up, and a spot on my lower left side of my back felt extremely tender and sore, like an inflamed kidney or something. About 10 minutes later, I started feeling my contractions all over my left side, so the doctor came back in to give me a booster. It worked, I was completely numb except for one spot about the size of the tip of my pinky... weird.

Like I mentioned before, I started shaking as soon as my water broke. By shaking, I mean VIOLENTLY shaking. My shaking caused the bed to shake and all the equiptment. Sam got in bed with me to try and soothe my body. I'm not sure if it stopped the shaking, but it made me feel better. My shaking made it so that they couldn't register the baby's heartbeat, so they decided they needed to put in an internal monitor. I was at a five when I got the epidural, and this was less than a half later. When they went to put in the monitor, they saw that Brinley was crowning. I went from a 5 to a 10 in less than 30 minutes. Crazy, huh? That's why I was shaking so hard. The doctor told the nurse to turn off my epidural, otherwise I'd still be numb long long after the baby came. I gave a couple of hard pushes, but then the doctor told me to just let my body do it itself, that she was coming whether I pushed or not. It was so nice... no tearing or screaming. In fact, there was more laughing and joking around than anything. Let me tell you, it is SOOOO nice to birth a baby that has a small head. Makes recovery a snap.

Brinley's birth had a couple of surprised for us. First, the doctor had me deliver Brinley myself... something I was not expecting and wasn't really sure that I wanted to do, but it ended up being a really awesome experience. They put her right up on my chest, which I always thought was gross, but it was actually a good bonding experience. And Sam cut the umbilical cord, again something unexpected and not exactly wanted, but a good experience.

About two hours after Brinley was born, Sam's family brought Levi to the hospital to meet his new sister. I was fully expecting him to be wary of me because of the IV and hospital bed and everything, but he wasn't. He climbed up and sat next to me. He got a couple of "Big Brother" presents that occupied his attention the rest of the time. He got restless super fast, though, and was anxious to leave. Hospitals aren't very much fun for little ones... or big ones either, I guess.

We had to stay the night again at the hospital, but then we talked the nurses into letting us leave earlier than we were supposed to the next day. Being at the hospital is so boring. It started snowing right around the time that Brinley was born, and then didn't stop for two weeks. It snowed also when Levi was born (albiet that was in March, not December), so we have two snow babies. And we love them both so much! Below is a video of Levi and Brinley right when we got home from the hospital. It is pretty hard to hear Sam, but he is asking Levi where all of Brinley's body parts were (eyes, nose, toes, etc.). Levi pointed to all of them, which surprised us since we'd never played that game before.
